Food prices are equally insane. Rice omelets, which usually cost at most ¥800 ($10), can be ¥4,000 ($50), and drink prices can cost up to ¥5,000 ($62) for a single glass of fizzy juice. One Y1 Game customer told Up! that after losing paper-rock-scissors to a maid, he had to pay around ¥20,000 ($250), while another recounted how his friend from Wakayama came to an Osaka maid cafe and left ¥70,000 ($878) poorer. During the 1980s, as hostess bars exploded in major Japanese cities, the press began reporting how these watering holes were taking advantage of their clientele, slapping them with stiff service charges and exorbitant bills.
